Planning a Tour

The "official" rideable section of the Ridgeway is from Avebury to Goring. It's about 40-50 miles long, and can be ridden in a day if you're fit enough. However, there are many more tracks attached to the Ridgeway that provide many more miles of off road riding. As a result a tour can be anything from one to three days.

All of our routes start/end in Swindon, Avebury, Goring, or Reading. You decide where you want to start and finish, how many days riding you want to do, and we'll plan a route to suit. One day rides are based around starting/finishing in Swindon or Avebury as that area is better for one day loops.

It's worth considering using a train to access the ridgeway, especially if you're going to spend a night somewhere as it eliminates any car/parking issues. The nearest train stations are Swindon and Goring. Reading is also a good option as it's a main station allowing more flexibility with travel. It's only a further 12 (ish) miles on from Goring and mostly off road.

One thing you might want to consider is the weather when planning your route. The prevailing winds blow from the south west, which means statistically the best chance of having a tail wind is if you travel from Avebury towards Goring and Reading. Obviously this isn't guaranteed. The British weather is what it is and you take your chances.

If you intend to use the train a good route is from Swindon station to Reading station. There would be a main train station either end of your route, and hopefully the prevailing winds should be at your back. The most direct route is about 40-50 miles and can be done in a day, but misses out the first section of the Ridgeway from Avebury. The longer route takes in Avebury and can take one to three days depending on how hard you want to make your ride.

The Ridgeway is not exacting brimming with accomadation options as it's a quite area. If you're planning on staying in a luxury spa hotel with a pool you're going to be disappointed. Realistically your options are B&B's, pubs, or camping. We can make suggestions, or if you prefer we can organise this for you.

We can provide a bag carrying service if you don't fancy carrying any extra weight.
